Celebrating the Champions of Human Rights that Walk Among Us

In celebrating Human Rights Day 2024, we are calling for nominations for the Human Rights Champion Awards Ceremony.
The Samoa Office of the Ombudsman/NHRI will be hosting a Human Rights Champions Awards Ceremony for those who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights in Samoa, specifically in areas of:

  • Rule of Law & Democracy; and
  • Climate Change

Why a Human Rights Champions Award Ceremony?

Human rights awards serve several purposes such as:

  • Public recognition: Human rights defenders are often volunteers with the courage to take a stand, voice an objection and deliver an effort in areas and gaps that are sometimes overlooked by the everyday machinery of society.
  • Collaboration: This is an opportunity for recipients to work with like-minded organizations and individuals to reach and further their goals in the advancement of human rights. It is also an opportunity for professional growth.
  • Support for human rights defenders: It is a platform for defenders to be supported and realize that they are never alone in the fight for human rights.
    As such, we hope to acknowledge and honor the champions of human rights that walk among us for the seeds they plant today contribute immensely to the human rights landscape of tomorrow.

What are the Human Rights Champion Awards?
Nominations will be accepted for five (5) human rights awards namely:

  • Young People’s Human Rights Champion
  • Community Human Rights Champion
  • Media Human Rights Champion
  • Human Rights Justice Champion
  • Komesina o Sulufaiga Award

Who can be a nominee?

CRITERIA

In choosing the recipients for the Awards, we considered work done in 2023 as well as ongoing contribution to the advancement of human rights in the areas of – Rule of Law & Democracy and Climate Change.
An individual, organization or community group need only be nominated once
They must have been active in the above areas from 1 November 2023 to 1 November 2024 for activities that can include the following:

  • Taking action to overcome discrimination or infringement of human rights
  • Encouraging harmony between people of different, race, sex, gender, age or ethnic origin
  • Promoting human rights and equal opportunities for vulnerable groups such as children and young people, women, persons with a disability, the elderly
  • Increasing awareness of issues of injustice or inequality

ELIGIBILITY

  • Nominees must be a Samoan citizen and be living in Samoa OR be an organisation or association that is registered in Samoa
  • For the Young People’s Champion Award, the nominee must be 25 years old or younger.
  • Self-nominations are accepted

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • Does the nominee contribute to advancing human rights in specific areas nominated for the year in Samoa?
  • Does the entry provide specific examples of contribution?
  • Has the nominee raised community awareness of the issue?
  • Is there support for the issue?
  • How effective was the outcome?
  • Did the nominee overcome any obstacles to achieving their outcome?

How can a nominee be nominated?

  • Nominations are FREE.
  • You can nominate yourself or the organisation you work for or a person or organisation you admire.
  • People and organisations can be nominated in multiple categories.

DESCRIPTION

  • Tell us who your nominee is – provide a brief biography of the person or organization you are nominating.
  • Tell us exactly why your nominee should get an award. What has the nominee accomplished? How has their work made an impact? What’s the broader context of achievements or contributions? What prompted you to submit your nomination? Provide as much information about their achievements and/or service as possible.

Keep it clear and concise

  • Aim for quality not quantity. Focus on the work that’s specifically related to the reason you’re nominating the person or organisation.
  • Provide supporting material
  • Supporting material such as photographs, newspaper clippings, and links to blogs/websites are great. But be sure these are relevant to your nomination.

Awards will be presented on 10 December 2024 at the Lava Hotel in celebration of the international Human Rights Day.
