International Engagement

banner3An important part of the work of the NHRI is to advise the Government on its reporting obligations under international human rights instruments and on the content of those reports. The Institution must also provide information to the international human rights system, including the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms, and the human rights treaty bodies.Samoa is a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women; and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Each of these treaties has reporting obligations. In addition, the Human Rights Council conducts what is termed the Universal Periodic Review of all states, to assess each state’s compliance with human rights. The NHRI will assist the government in preparation of these reports, as well as provide information to the bodies in question.
